Sport massage is a crucial component of an athlete's training regimen before, during, and after sports events.
The Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) in collaboration with Sports Science Massage Centre (SSMC) is excited to offer this hybrid short course.
Join us as we equip you with foundational sports massage techniques and knowledge to enhance your skills in injury prevention, recovery, and performance.

What does this course cover?
This course is ideal for coaches, athletes and health, and fitness professionals wanting to add an additional skill or service to their offering. On completion of this course, you will:
- Understand the history of massage.
- Understand the principles and benefits of sport massage.
- Demonstrate knowledge of injuries and injury management.
- Plan and prepare for sport massage.
- Implement safe and effective sport massage, using appropriate methods and techniques.

Venue: Hybrid Learning: (On site at Sports Science Institute of SA, Boundary Road, Newlands, Cape Town (for compulsory practical training workshop and practical assessment) and remote online self-study for theoretical knowledge accessed via the SSISA Moodle Learner Management System).

Frequently asked questions?
All students are required to complete 30 workplace practical hours in order to receive their certificates.
All students will require a stable internet connection. Students must have sufficient data or Wi Fi access to download and upload content, complete assessments, and access all additional resources.
Access to a tablet or computer is required. Smartphones may be used for viewing information, but are not suitable for completing assessments.
Students will also need to download the Moodle mobile app for off-line usage and have access to the latest version of Chrome, Firefox or Edge
The WIL component consists of 30 hours, which may only be completed after the compulsory practical training weekend. Students will receive 5 hours for attending the weekend itself.
Students can complete their remaining WIL hours by practising their massage techniques on family and friends. They are also welcome to approach sporting clubs or running clubs if they would like to gain experience in those environments.
Sport Massage is a short course recognised and endorsed by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and Register of Exercise Professionals South Africa (REPSSA).
Continued Professional Development (CPD) points are awarded to qualified health and fitness professions registered with these bodies.
On successful completion of this course you will have the confidence and knowledge to work with teams and individuals, including:
- Fitness facilities – large gyms and fitness facilities.
- Sports Clubs and Teams
- Athletic events such as cycling races, rugby games and many more.
