Job purpose:
The Fitness Centre Nurse is responsible for basic medical support to members. This will include monitoring blood pressure, pulse and, if indicated, oxygen saturations and glucose levels of gym members, and advising them accordingly on their recommended training intensity. Such members will be chiefly higher risk members on the Prime-Time programme, but any fitness centre member with concerns will be seen by the nurse. The Fitness Centre Nurse will also be responsible for helping with medical emergencies during their shift times, and for providing basic first aid. You will liaise with the Fitness Centre Manager and SSISA doctor as indicated. In addition, you will assist clinical staff in assessments and research projects requiring basic nursing input.
1. Qualifications & Experience Requirements
- Nursing diploma or degree
- At least 5 year’s post graduate experience in the nursing field
- Valid CPR Certificate
- Registration with a Professional Body
- Personal Indemnity Insurance
Preferred
- Experience in working with elderly patients
- Basic research experience
- Experience in a health and fitness environment
Nursing Operations:
- Monitor the progress of all high risk gym members, including those in the “Prime Time” programme.
- Take/check the blood pressure, pulse, saturation and glucose measurements of members as needed.
- Discuss concerns about any of the above readings with the member and a fitness Biokineticist to decide whether their training may need to be adapted.
- Refer members to a doctor and inform management thereof.
- Ensure a smooth transition of all members from the Monitored Cardiac rehabilitation programme to the “Prime Time” Programme.
- Liaise with the Doctors from SSISA as well as other referring doctors regarding members needs as well as feedback subsequent to joining SSISA.
- Stay up-to-date with all patients history and be aware of any changes in their medical status or medications which could affect their gym routine and safety.
- Ensure that all high-risk members have been for an annual check-up and update their files accordingly.
- To offer additional services in line with the scope of practice of a Nursing Practitioner, to the Wellness Division. This may include providing basic support/measurements for Biokineticist or Doctor’s assessments. It may also include being involved in basic nursing duties during clinical research studies.
3. Attributes & Skills
- Proficient in taking clinical measurements including blood pressure, pulse, glucose, oxygen saturations.
- Proficient in interpreting such results and providing advice accordingly.
- Proficient in recognising when a member may need further medical attention, and providing initial medical measures, e.g. bronchodilator pump, headache tablet, wound care.
- Referring members to other clinical staff members (Biokineticist/physiotherapist/medical doctor) if needed.
- Proficient in first aid and basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Compassionate and caring personality, who carefully listens to members and advises accordingly with empathy and patience.
- Ability to explain management plans simply and accurately.
- Ability to liaise with the rest of the clinical team in a professional and timely manner to optimise the wellbeing of the member.
- Has a keen interest in evidence-based medicine and research.
