Chronic diseases, also known as non-communicable diseases (NCDs), are a major health concern in South Africa. A chronic disease is defined broadly as a condition that lasts one year or more and requires ongoing medical attention or limits activities of daily living, or both. These diseases are long-term illnesses caused by a combination of genetic, physiological, environmental, and behavioural factors. Some of the most common chronic diseases in South Africa include:- Diabetes: The number of deaths from diabetes increased 36.5% between 2008 and 2018
- Cardiovascular diseases: Includes heart attacks and strokes, and is a leading cause of death
- Hypertension: The most prevalent chronic disease in South Africa, affecting 4.74 million people in 2019
- HIV and AIDS: A chronic disease that has been a burden in South Africa for generations
- Cancer: Cancer-related deaths increased 29.3% between 2008 and 2018
- Tuberculosis: A common and challenging problem in South Africa

NCD's are the leading cause of death and disability worldwide, accounting for nearly 60% of all deaths and 43% of the global disease burden. Deaths from major NCDs in South Africa have increased by 58.7% over the last 20 years.
