“I always felt that having a disability has limited me in pursuing sports, but my mind has changed from two things and that was my job, as I now work for a disability organisation and my training at the SSISA. I get to pursue my dreams of competing in sports and my Biokineticist takes it on as though I can do anything we train for. The support I have received from him has been exceptional, and I believe that through working with him I will continue to see improvements in my training and in reaching my goals and dreams. Having a personal trainer has changed “gym” into “fun”.”

“The Strong2Run course is for all runners, no matter how experienced or novice, trail or tar, all will benefit from it. It is run in a fun, non threatening way. Great fun is had by all and the simple, yet important aspects of cross training and other training techniques and exercises can only be of benefit.
Give your running a boost and reduce your chances of injury while having great fun. Join the next Strong2Run course, it will be well worth the effort and you will be a better and smarter runner.”

“Losing 26kg in nine months and completing her first half marathon have made Hannelie more confident. “Positive responses from family, friends and colleagues have also boosted me. A friend I hadn’t seen for a long time didn’t recognise me, and when she did, she burst into tears of happiness for me. She couldn’t believe the transformation."”

“This was a great introduction to outdoor exercise, and more of a push to improve overall fitness levels. It was a great challenge to keep up with those a lot stronger and fitter.”

“Partly from my past experiences; I have broken my neck twice and that gave me a lot of time to take a good look at my life. It is the only life I have and I need to make the most of it. Carrying baggage weighs you down. I also get my inspiration from my running group and mentors. There are some inspirational words that stick in my mind; Kathy McQuaide once said, “We all create our own glass ceilings; nobody can break these but ourselves. It is up to us to break them and continue breaking them".”

“The SSISA Strong2Run programme is highly practical, simple, yet scientifically sound, specifically targeted to the needs of runners and also very importantly teaches you how to get maximum gains without spending hours in the gym. What I love the most about the programme though is the fun of working out with other like-minded people. It feels more like a group run than a gym session (and that is how us runners like to roll).”

“I know. I seem quite self-aware surrounding this issue. I learned recently that my sub-concious mind creates ways and explanations to avoid making changes. Change is sometimes discomforting, but forward movement and inaction cannot co-exist. Middle age looms, and thoughts of health and longevity have made their way to the conscious brain.
All of this exposition serves to explain how I currently find myself in week 4 of the “HEALTHY WEIGHT” programme offered by the Sports Science Institute of South Africa in Newlands, Cape Town. A combination of nutrition, group training and psychology helps us at Beginner level to understand why we have developed these bad habits around eating, like why I was able to go cold turkey with cigarettes over 4 years ago, but the thought of a custard donut or a prawn pizza turns me to drooling mush. The eating plan is designed to kickstart your metabolism, and doesn’t deny us carbs or fats, but offers a more balanced approach with a focus on smaller portions but with more meals than the popular 3 a day.”

“Yes, it’s structured. And yes, it’s varied. And yes, that’s a good thing. When I walk into a gym on my own, I have the same problem I’d imagine a lot of people have: I look around, pick a machine that nobody else is using, and muck around with that machine for 20 minutes. Then I klap a protein shake and go home, wondering why I’m not seeing the results, and wondering why I’m sore after my amazing workout. At RIPT, the structure makes sure you get a proper workout. The variety makes sure you work your whole body. The intensity makes sure you actually get results. And the group work gives you someone else to measure yourself by. (It’s also a lot less lonely and a lot more sociable when you have other human beings doing the same workout as you!)”

“As we stood in the cool breeze at the start, I reminded myself why i was doing the event and what i needed to do to achieve my 12-week goal. Surrounded by my lively and somewhat nervous colleagues, I sensed that this was going to be an event to change my life. As the gun went off, I surged forward with the mass of moving bodies - my race had begun. Despite a very challenging hill midway through the race, I only had one thing in mind, NOT TO WALK!
I kept putting one foot in front of the other and could feel the metres melting away. Soon the finishing straight was in sight and my heart pounded as I realised”

Strong2RunWhat Members Are Saying – Neil Carrick
“The friendships that were formed and the camaraderie that we developed as a group was amazing. I now understand why people run and it is “MY DRUG”. My daily fix. If I now have not run in 2 days, I am not a nice person to be around. I need to be out there enjoying the road, the company, the challenge.
What the hell was I doing on a treadmill for so long? There is a world outside of the gym but I do see the huge benefit of strength training in the gym so you need to have a balanced approach.
The programme teaches you discipline and the group dynamic makes it easier to get on the road when you sometimes don’t feel like it for whatever reason. The programme allows you to systematically improve your overall fitness and get ready for your big race. You face your demons and learn how to deal with them. The support from the team and expertise that SISSA has to offer is second to none. How can you not succeed?”
