Be your personal best. Optimise your sleep.

Sleep Science is brought to you by the Sports Science Institute of South Africa and powered by scientists from the University of Cape Town. We care about your sleep and it is our mission to use cutting-edge and innovative research to optimise your sleep.

Our vision is a healthy nation through sound sleep, and our mission is to optimise the nation’s healthwell-being and performance through evidence-based, best-practice sleep research, teaching, education and services.

Sleep is a natural and critical part of life. We all do it. In fact, many of us will spend up to a third of our lives sleeping. Although we have all suffered the consequences of poor sleep at one point or another, we often ignore just how important it actually is.
Poor sleep is linked to a myriad of physical and mental health problems, including:

  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure and cardiovascular disease
  • Insulin resistance and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
  • Mental health disorders
  • Reduced productivity
  • Irritability

Having a good night’s sleep is important for our overall health and quality of life and may also be responsible for how you feel right now. Lethargy, dullness of mind, forgetfulness, feelings of not being able to cope, or even grumpiness are all signs of insufficient, poor quality sleep. But how do you know that your sleep is suboptimal? And what can you do about it?

Sleep Coaching

This service is for anyone who is concerned about their sleep and would like to have it formally assessed with one of our sleep consultants. During the first 60min one-on-one consultation, you will have the opportunity to share your sleep concerns and habits with the sleep consultant.
For the next 7 days, your sleep patterns will be recorded using a specialised wrist-worn sleep monitor and you will keep a sleep diary.
During the 30min follow-up session, the sleep consultant will provide you with a report about your sleep habits and patterns, and discuss your personal sleep-related challenges and recommend the best way forward.

Sleep Coaching is for anyone who is concerned about their sleep, has had a formal sleep assessment (e.g. Sleep Check, Sleep Apnoea testing) and would like personalised assistance to improve their sleep. During these 45min one-on-one sessions, the sleep consultant will work with you to explore and implement personalised sleep hygiene strategies that you can use to optimise your sleep. We’re in this together and will be available to guide you on your new sleep journey. You may attend as many or as few sessions as you like. You will know when you are ready to continue working on your sleep on your own.

Through our partnership with MySleep, we also offer testing for sleep apnoea. This home-based assessment monitors your heart rate, breathing and blood oxygen levels while you sleep. A diagnosis will be given by the pulmonologist who will evaluate the outcomes of your overnight assessment. This will be followed by recommendations for treatment, and throughout this process, one of our sleep consultants will be on hand to answer your questions, offering you the support you may need.

Sleep education is high on our list of priorities. We offer tailored talks and workshops to groups of any size on a range of sleep-related topics. For example, we could chat to high school learners about getting the sleep they need to perform at their best in the classroom, on the sports field and amongst their friends, or to a sports team about managing their sleep when travelling abroad, or we could host a workshop for employees looking to combat fatigue in the workplace and optimise their workplace productivity. These could take place at SSISA (which we host regularly) or off-site at a venue of your choice. So check out our website to see what is coming up. Alternatively contact us to plan a personalised sleep talk or workshop to suit your needs.

We’re committed to education. Join us on our journey to optimise the nation’s sleep through learning more about sleep, evaluating your own sleep and applying basic principles of good sleep practise in your everyday life. The presentations and videos in our online course, “Optimise your Sleep,” are designed to enrich your understanding of sleep, answer common sleep-related questions, and equip you with valid tools to interrogate your sleep pattern, environment and associated habits. With this in hand, you will learn to interpret your profile, identify likely disrupters of your sleep, and apply evidence-based practical tips and strategies which you can implement to optimise your sleep.
