Cycling Service

Overview

The Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) Cycling Laboratory, engineered by the experts at Science to Sport, is a state of the art facility. The performance testing and bike fitment services are offered to all cyclists, whether you are brand new to cycling or an elite or even professional cyclist.

Cycling Assessments

You can’t manage what you don’t measure. The data collected during both these assessments will be analysed and a detailed report of your results will be compiled.

Vo2 Max Testing

What’s Measured
We test maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 MAX), peak power output (PPO) and metabolic thresholds.

Why Do it?
All of these variables have been associated with endurance performance. Regular monitoring of the changes in these variables can be used to quantify training adaptation.
**The data collected during the test are used to identify individualised training zones.

How Does it Work?

  • Height, weight and body fat percentage are measured.
  • 10 minute, self-paced warm up precedes the test.
  • The test begins at a low intensity, and increases at a constant rate until exhaustion.

Then What?
The data collected during the assessment is analysed and a detailed report of your results is compiled.

Fat Max Testing

What’s Measured
The Fat Max test determines an intensity range or zone where fat oxidation rates are maximal.

Why Do it?
Training at the correct intensity ensures that the majority of energy is derived from fat. Regular monitoring of your Fat Max will allow you to determine if your ability to use fat as a fuel has increased.

How Does it Work?

  • Height, weight and body fat percentage are measured.
  • 10-minute, self-paced warm up precedes the test.
  • The test begins at a low intensity and increases every three minutes until the athlete reaches their threshold.

Then What?
The data collected during the assessment is analysed and a detailed report of your results is compiled.

Bike Fitting

Basic Ergofit

What’s Measured in This Test?
A basic interview is followed by measurements of the individual.

These are used to generate a highly accurate predicted fitting report.

The existing bicycle is then measured using objective criteria and accurate tools.

Any parameters that are significantly different to the predictive report are corrected.

The cyclist will then be assessed on the bike using our 6 point optimization process.

THEN WHAT?

Any minor abnormalities are corrected before generating a final fitting report.

At the end of the fitting the cyclist can be advised on the correct saddle size after measurement of the contact points using the ErgoFiT saddle sizer.

Professional Fit

What’s Measured in this Test?

Following all procedures covered in the Advanced ErgoFiT, further optimisation of all parameters is achieved through saddle pressure mapping with review of:

  • Centre of pressure position
  • Pelvic stability
  • Quality of movement pattern
  • Peak pressure values
  • Dynamic pressure changes
  • Assessment of pressure in relation to saddle size with recommendations of optimal saddle size, shape and position

A video analysis with pre and post fitting comparisons of stability and position is also included.

Saddle Check

This assessment requires a previous Basic ErgoFiT.

What’s Measured in this Fitting?

Saddle pressure mapping with review of:

  • Centre of pressure position
  • Pelvic stability in sagittal and coronal planes
  • Quality of movement pattern
  • Peak pressure values
  • Dynamic pressure changes
  • Assessment of pressure in relation to saddle size with recommendations of optimal saddle size, shape and position

Advanced Ergofit / Ergofit Saddle Sizer

What’s Measured in this Test?

This fitting includes all aspects of the Basic ErgoFiT, but includes the following additional assessments:

  • Assessment and correction of leg length discrepancy.
  • Assessment and correction of foot alignment.
  • Optimisation of cleat position.
  • Assessment of stability using video analysis

“Let the Endurance Studio take you to your personal best”

DR MIKE POSTHUMUS

Endurance Studio

The SSISA Endurance Studio is the dream of any endurance athlete, whether you are professional or recreational. Backed by over 20 years of in-house science and research and managed by the SSISA’s Sports Performance Centre – it’s an ideal place to train.

Our studio is equipped with 10 brand new Wattbikes, 8 Grucox eccentric isokinetic bikes and a core stretching area.

Personalised Coaching

Our partners, Science to Sport, offer personalised and interactive coaching for some of the world’s leading experts. After thorough physiological testing, we will provide you with personalised coaching using the latest training techniques specific to your sport and discipline. We currently offer three levels of coaching.

(a fully immersive scientific approach to performance)

  • Fully interactive performance management plan.
  • This category requires the athlete to own a power meter.
  • Training and monitoring are conducted as in Category 2 but in addition, power meter and heart rate data are recorded for all training sessions and analysed at weekly intervals.
  • Analyses such as session on session progression, specific variables such as torque values and other high level assessments are conducted.
  • Submaximal cycling tests may be incorporated in order to track progressions and possibly fatigue through detailed analysis of the relationship between heart rate and power.
  • The training programme is updated in response to the analysis and feedback and the coach will provide objective feedback on improvements in performance and training status on a weekly basis.

(builds on the effectiveness of Category 3)

  • Weekly fatigue monitoring.
  • Incorporates weekly monitoring of training load fatigue (through Performance Management Charts (PMC), a DALDA questionnaire and regular feedback from athlete.
  • Allows for training load to be altered in response to changes in recovery rate or other interfering factors (such as work and social commitments).
  • Interaction with coach is weekly by email and telephonic interaction and the training programme will be updated weekly (if required).
  • Provides the competitive club or junior athlete with a personalised training programme which is tailored to their specific training status, time constraints and goals.
  • Prescriptive and is based on specific performance goals and events.
  • Updated on a monthly basis.
  • Limited interaction with the coach (email, telephonic or direct face to face feedback at the completion of each month’s training).
  • The next installment of training programme will incorporate changes based on the athlete’s feedback.
For all our coaching categories performance testing is required at 6 month intervals to objectively measure improvements in training status and to update training zones.
