Meet The Team

Orthopaedic Rehabilitation

Orthopaedic rehabilitation is a form of therapy that treats a wide variety of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system. It helps to improve strength, range of motion, balance, gait coordination, and to maximize each individual’s ability to perform activities of daily living and return to their prior level of function. Our Biokinetics team uses a scientific and evidence based approach backed by UCT to advise, assess and assist patients with orthopaedic dysfunction.

Neurological Rehabilitation

The SSISA Biokinetics Services use physical activity as the main therapeutic modality for final phase rehabilitation of neurological conditions, to help those with diseases, trauma, or disorders of the nervous system. Neurological rehabilitation can often improve function, reduce symptoms and improve the well-being and performance of the patient. The interventions and programmes are scientific and evidence-based and we work with patients who have suffered from a stroke or heart attack; a head and/or spinal cord injury and those with neural conditions.

Our expertise as a world class biokinetics facility allows us to work with people with a range of different needs:

  • Orthopaedic injuries

  • Stroke and cardiac patients

  • Arthritic conditions

  • Osteoporosis

  • Joint replacements

  • Back and knee problems

  • Neural conditions

  • Head and spinal cord injuries

  • Pre- and post-operative strengthening

  • Injury prevention

  • Aqua therapy

  • Posture correction

Our clients undergo a comprehensive assessment, which evaluates:

This specialized unit is utilized in the training/rehabilitation process. It is unique in that it applies the principle of eccentric training to achieve the desired results.

What is eccentric training?

During eccentric training the muscle elongates while trying to resist or slow down an opposing force. It provides a controlling force to the joint movement.

What are the benefits of eccentric training on the Grucox?

  • Greater strength gains(compared to concentric alone)
  • Injury prevention
  • More functional
  • Improved muscle control
  • Minimal cardiac load with maximal muscle strain/effort
  • Low joint impact – ideal for older or ‘at risk’ clients

Who should perform Grucox eccentric training?

All rehabilitation and training sessions are conducted by a health care professional (physiotherapist or a biokineticist), who has vast knowledge of the eccentric principle and the training process.

Walking with Brandon

The Walking with Brandon Foundation (WWBF) was founded by the Beack Family after their son Brandon was left paralysed from a tragic gymnastics training accident in 2012. Brandon attended a top rehabilitation facility in the USA – the Shepherd Centre in Atlanta, Georgia – for 6 weeks of advanced neurological rehabilitation, followed by an advanced therapeutic programme for 6 weeks.

Therapy and Beyond Rehabilitation Programme

The “Therapy & Beyond rehabilitation programme” is evidence-based and strives to develop the facilities and knowledge in South Africa to properly provide for the long-term needs of individuals with neurological conditions. The philosophy of the programme is to help take those affected BEYOND what they previously thought their bodies were capable of, having first provided them with advanced and effective rehabilitation.

The "Therapy & Beyond rehabilitation programme" is a six-stage process:

  • Stage 1

  • Stage 2
    Muscle Recruitment

  • Stage 3
    Posture & Joint Stability

  • Stage 4
    Resistance & Endurance Training

  • Stage 5

  • Stage 6
    Gait Training
