About Us

How we started

The concept of the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) was born from the idea of developing sporting icons in South Africa to promote national pride and unity. The initial vision was generated after extensive interaction between Morné du Plessis, Professor Tim Noakes and Johann Rupert. Their goal was to provide a facility that would primarily fund research and apply that research to sport, so that athletes of all disciplines could improve their performance. These visionaries also wanted to build public interest in the country’s top sportsmen and women, whose success would create shared pride in South Africa.

Who we are

The Sports Science Institute of South Africa exists to optimise the sporting performance and health of all South Africans through the execution, application, and dissemination of science.

We believe in the broader translation of our science for sport, health and quality of life, so that we can make a difference in the day-to-day lives of all South Africans. Located in Newlands, Cape Town, our reach extends beyond the borders of Western Cape and South Africa. We have contributed to changes in sports’ rules, strategies and policies both nationally and globally. We create best practice, and strive to be our personal best so that you can achieve yours.

Meet Our People

What sets the people of SSISA apart from the rest, is the sense of belonging you feel when you walk through the doors. We aim to be friendly and professional at all times, and ensure that the results of our research are translated to reach the greater South Africa, and beyond. We are all united in why we are here – to give our personal best so that you can achieve yours.

WOOLWORTHS

The SSISA has enjoyed a long and fruitful partnership with Woolworths, resulting in many successful health and wellness projects. These include the Woolworths Making the Difference My Schools Project, implemented in collaboration with the Department of Education for Grade 4 learners as well as the Teachers on the Move campaign implemented in schools and transforming the lives of   teachers. Woolworths also partners with our annual 8 week campaign in support of the World Health Organisation’s message to ‘Move for Your Health’. This culminates in a school’s mass participation competition where 1000’s of children and their families take part in an annual 6km run organised by a local running club.

Brand ID

Brand ID is a business that strives for excellence in our portfolio of brands that form part of our family. We are therefore tremendously inspired and excited to have a partnership with the premier athletic centre of excellence – the Sports Science Institute of South Africa. We firmly believe that this will not just be an instance of a vendor supplying apparel and technical equipment to an institution, but rather a meeting of like minds focused on mutual success, the engagement of consumers to help achieve excellence and new thinking to define ways of leveraging success together.
