KIDZ ON THE MOVE
KIDZ ON THE MOVE
How do South African kids shape up health-wise? Sadly the news was not so good in the 2010 Healthy Active Kids Report Card compiled by the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) and Discovery Vitality. Firstly, only 42% of our youth participated in enough vigorous physical activity to promote health benefits. Secondly, the report showed that 20% of kids are overweight, with 5% of them actually being obese.

Why is this? Clearly too much sedentary behaviour (TV, computers, cell phones) and a lack of exercise/activity opportunities. The statistics on sedentary behaviour are alarming, revealing that 50% of kids spend 3 hours/day staring at a TV or computer screen! Parents and adults are so important in being good role models and in finding opportunities for kids to be physically active.
We are delighted to announce that the SSISA has developed an all-encompassing kids’ programme – KIDZ ON THE MOVE, to help Cape Town kids get active! It covers all aspects of fitness and is aimed at 7 to 14 year olds who need to get fit, whilst having fun, making friends and improving skills. Classes will commence 16 January 2013 and take place 4 days a week from 16h00-17h00. The Friday class will be held outdoors on the SAB fields near SSISA, promising variety and exciting activities. Kids will also get to meet different sporting celebrities once a month at their classes and will receive a T-shirt and water bottle on joining.
Comprehensive assessments will be done at the beginning and end of every term, enabling all to see improvements and the benefits of KIDZ ON THE MOVE!

Quarterly, as well as annual options are available, for either 2 or 4 sessions a week. Family memberships are also on offer for those parents/guardians wanting to become part of the SSISA family by training in our appealing Wellness and Fitness centre.
SSISA will also be holding a kids’ holiday programme from 10-14 December 2012 and 7-11 January 2013, 08:30-12:00, so if you are looking for some healthy, fun activity for them during the holiday season, our programme is just right!
