Outreach: MACSTEEL Maestros

Natalie du Toit

The MACSTEEL Maestros programme has evolved into a programme with three target groups:

  1. The individual outreach programme
This provides an environment wherein young, talented, financially disadvantaged athletes receive guidance towards reaching their greatest potential. The programme gives its athletes the experience of what is required of world-class athletes while focusing their attention on aspects of their physical development and personal growth. A long-term goal is to develop them into world-class athletes, able to compete and excel at the highest levels, whilst coping with the rigors of such a lifestyle. A MACSTEEL Super Maestros programme has also evolved. Podium athletes competing at international level receive special benefits.

  2. The group programme
Based on the needs of the specific athletes, this programme can provide both physiological aspects as well as life skills modules or it can focus specifically on the latter. Federations identify the groups needing assistance and the co-ordinator, in conjunction with the players and administrators, sets up modules that can be time intensive i.e. over a period of consecutive days or can be run over a period of weeks/months. Experts in various fields are called upon to facilitate the modules.

  3. The elite individual programme
These top class athletes need specific attention on a one-on-one basis. Again the modules are based on a needs analysis involving the athlete, administrators and various service providers. Modules can range from stress management, media training, substance abuse and many other lifeskills components. Central to the Maestros programmes is a holistic approach with mentoring and monitoring at all levels. Athletes are offered the necessary coping mechanisms to achieve success both on the sportsfield and off.

  4. The MACSTEEL Athletes Service Centre offers access to informational technology for athletes, coaches and administrators. Situated in the heart of SSISA, this new centre has fast become a meeting place and a hive of communication networking.
