Move For your Health – Sports Science Institute of South Africa promotes physical activity
As part of a global World Health Organisation campaign to encourage regular physical activity for a healthy lifestyle, the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) wants to spread the campaign message which is: “MOVE FOR YOUR HEALTH”.
Move for your health at the SSISA’s Wellness and Fitness Centre
To promote physical activity and help get our nation moving, the SSISA will be hosting an OPEN WEEK at its Wellness and Fitness Centre i.e. Institute will open its gym facility to the general public from Monday 19 May to Saturday 24 May 2008. Not only does this give the public the chance to experience the state of the art exercise facilities, but also the opportunity to interact with the SSISA Wellness and Fitness Centre’s team of highly qualified Biokineticists, Wellness Nurses and Health Professionals.
There is a growing concern in South Africa that the nation’s population is become more sedentary by the day. The World Health Organisation initiated the global Move for your Health campaign after it reported that worldwide:
• Each year at least 1.9 million people die as a result of physical inactivity.
• At least 30 minutes of regular, moderate-intensity physical activity on 5 days per week reduces the risk of several common non communicable diseases (NCDs).
• More than 35 million people died of NCDs in 2005 - this represented 60% of all deaths worldwide.
With one in every 3 men and one in every 2 women in South Africa being overweight, in opening its Wellness and Fitness Centre doors to the public, the SSISA can in part realise its mission statement, which is to optimise the sporting performance and health of all South Africans through the application, execution and dissemination of science, as well as positively promote the importance of exercise in everyday life.
