Health Promotions and Marketing

Health Promotions aims to gain exposure for the vision and mission of SSISA and ESSM. This is achieved through relationship building (particularly with the media and sponsors), and also by substantial content provision and dissemination. This promotes the credibility of SSISA and also increases awareness of SSISA, ESSM, Commercial partners and others. Health Promotions actively engages in project management of initiatives related to SSISA corporate associations.

Health Promotions achieves this through:

  • Workshops on health or sport-related topics
  • Health journalism - for magazines, newspapers, radio and web-sites
  • Editing articles and obtaining relevant articles on health issues
  • Organizing & giving presentations
  • Involving the media in special events, press conferences etc.
  • Media Liaison
  • Providing answers to health and fitness-related queries for magazines and websites
  • Being a SSISA health representative for television, radio and media interviews
  • Developing and sustaining key relationships with roles players including provincial and local partners and corporate sponsors

Workshop Series

Annually Health Promotions aims to run several workshops which may be linked to events such as the Two Oceans Marathon and Half Marathon, the Knysna Half-Marathon, the Gun Run or to cover specific sports and health areas such as triathlons and women's wellness workshops.


Article writing

Articles include:

  • Training guidelines for major sporting events (usually internet and newspaper) and on occasion radio
  • Informative articles submitted to newspapers for media campaigns leading up to key events
  • Articles on health issues in magazines such as Shape, Fair Lady, Cosmopolitan, Women's Value, Longevity, Best Life, Heart, O Mag, Femina, Runner's World and Men's Health
  • Sports-science related topics in journals such as Modern Medicine, Modern Pharmacy, TLC
  • Media releases prior to events at the Sports Science Institute and for research subject recruitment for ESSM research studies
  • Contributions made to www.health24 website and others
  • Reviews of articles to be published by magazines to ensure they are scientifically accurate

Presentations on a healthy lifestyle

Health Promotions is involved in setting up and presenting many health-related presentations to general public, including groups such as:

  • Schools
  • Companies as part of the WP Retirement Council workshops. These include many major companies such as ABSA, Caltex, Engen, Foschini etc.
  • UCT
  • Church groups and common-interest groups
  • Investor's Club
  • Other organizations requesting guest speakers

Other event organization and involvement

Health Promotions is always looking for opportunities to promote health via events, hence the development and implementation of various events, such as:

  1. The Move for Your Health event as part of the Don Lock Memorial 8km and 5km fun run and walk
  2. The Schools Mass Participation Competition as part of the Move for Health event
  3. Sports Science Institute Open Day
  4. Involvement with the Annual Discovery Vitality Fitness Convention

Health Promotions has also become involved annually in key events which promote health and exercise such as the Gun Run and the Big Walk. These are both Cape Town based events and Health Promotions contributes training programmes and advice as part of a media campaign in the build up to each event.


Health Promotions and commercial partners

Health Promotions manages the Woolworths account, which includes developing strategies with management as well as the implementation and marketing of key events. Current projects include the successful My Schools Project, MySchool Parent talks on nutrition for children as well as the introduction of the 1km Health Track concept to educators and learners. Other projects include the Exercise is Making the Difference DVD which encourages educators and learners to be more active as well as involvement by Woolworths in the Schools Mass Participation Competition as part of the Annual Move for Your Health event.


Health Promotions and ESSM

With ESSM doing such integral work at SSISA, Health Promotions attempts to publicise information they generate that is of public interest, for the purpose of:

  1. educating the public
  2. promoting ESSM
  3. strengthening the link between ESSM and SSISA
