Joining Procedure

Pre-participation health screen
As part of the joining process, you would have completed a pre-participation health screening. This is to assess your readiness to exercise. During this process, if certain risk factors were identified, you would been asked to obtain medical clearance from your doctor for unsupervised exercise prior to joining. This is to help ensure that your training with us is safe and effective.

Fitness Assessment and goal setting
When joining, an appointment will be booked for your first fitness assessment. This will include a certain amount of physical activity. Remember to come dressed in training clothes for each session. Shorts, t-shirts or tracksuits are suitable. During this time, you will participate in a number of fitness evaluations that will identify your current fitness level. You will also be encouraged to set goals for improvement in areas of health and fitness.

Exercise Programme
Once you have completed your assessment the Biokineticist will design a programme specific to your needs and goals. This ensures that your exercise routine is tailored to your specific requirements. These may range from improving your fitness levels to the extent that you are able to walk regularly without being out of breath, to running a half marathon in less than 2 hours, depending on your personal goals.

A second appointment will be booked for demonstration of your programme once you've been exercising for 3 months. You will be contacted three months later for your reassessment. This will enable you to note the progress you have made. These services are included in the standard joining fee.

Additional help
At all times a floor supervisor is available to assist you in your training. You are welcome to ask for assistance at any time.

Following your initial assessments we recognise the need to upgrade your programme from time to time. Certain hours of the week have been dedicated to this function. Half hour appointments are available for you to speak with one of the Biokineticists and make any necessary changes to your prescribed programme. Appointments can be booked at reception.

Rules & Regulations

To ensure your training experience is as enjoyable as possible, guidelines to use the facility have been outlined on your contract and below: Access to the Facility On joining, you will receive an access card. This card must be produced each time to gain access to the Fitness Centre. Should you forget your card at home, you will be required to pay a guest fee. This will be refunded to you on presentation of your card within a 7-day period. Should you lose your card, you will need to purchase a new one for a nominal fee.

Dress Code
A shirt or vest must be worn at all times. Correct footwear and exercise clothes must be worn while training in the Centre.

Sweat Towels
A sweat towel must be carried at all times. All equipment must be wiped off after use. Disinfectant is provided for this purpose. Members training without towels will be asked to leave the floor, or rent a towel from reception. Super Circuit & Toning Circuit The Super Circuit and Toning Circuit must be used in the correct order. Skipping of machines creates confusion and defeats the design of the circuit. Please read the directions at the circuit prior to use.

Electronic Equipment
Please ensure the use of the electronic equipment has been demonstrated to you prior to use. There is a time limit of 20 minutes during peak times. A peak time is defined as any time where there are people waiting to use the cardiovascular equipment. Our recognized peak times are 06:00 - 09:00 and 16:30-19:00.

Swimming Pool
Swimming caps must be worn at all times. Please shower before using the pool. No glass or food is permitted in the pool area. When sharing a lane, swim in a clockwise direction. Up to 5 swimmers may share a lane if necessary. Jumping from the bridge into the pool will result in immediate suspension of membership.

Weight Training Area
Please replace weights after use. Please ensure that use of free weight equipment has been demonstrated to you prior to use by a qualified staff member.

Steam Room
Always shower before using the steam room. For hygienic purposes, a towel must be used at all times. The following are not permitted in the steam room: Shaving, glass or food and children under the age of 15.

Indoor Track
Always run or walk in an anti-clockwise direction. Slower walkers/runners to use the inside lane. No spikes or cleated footwear may be worn.

Parking

Although parking space is available for members, regretfully it cannot always be guaranteed. Parking space may be limited due to events in the Conference Centre and when the rugby stadium is in use.

Temporary Memberships

The Wellness and Fitness Centre now offers a form of temporary membership. This would be the perfect option for those who prefer to join on a trial basis before committing to a full membership, for corporate executives who only visit Cape Town periodically of for visitors from other regions or countries. The temporary membership is in the form of a booklet consisting of 10 one-day passes, which can be used at any time, and is available at a low cost, so there is a considerable saving if you buy the booklet instead of day passes for multiple visits.
