Donor Funding

The construction of the Sports Science Institute of South Africa was funded by generous donations made directly to the University of Cape Town. The University, in turn, lent the funds to a Share Block Company, namely the Sports Science Share Block (Pty) Ltd., enabling this company to construct the building in Boundary Road, Newlands.

In order to secure the loan from the University of Cape Town, the Share Block Company ceded ownership of 15 of the 16 share blocks in the company to the University for the first 20 years of the project. The 16th share block is owned by the Western Province Rugby Football Union as part payment for the 99-year lease on the site on which the Institute has been erected.
