Apart from being South Africa's oldest annual event, the Discovery Cape Times Big Walk (as it is now known), is an event embedded in the make-up of Cape Town. The event has impacted and been part of the lives of many Cape Town families and communities, and is one of those events that when mentioned, is instantly known in the City.
Whilst it originated as a walking challenge over a 80 km route from the Grand Parade in central Cape Town to Simonstown and back, the event has morphed over the years into the largest timed walking event in the world with eight different distances ranging from 5 km to 80 km. This allows both casual and serious members of the public to compete.
Not only is the event great fun and community-building event, but the actual walking training offers participants substantial health benefits. It improves circulation and cardiovascular function, strengthens bones, helps to build and maintain muscle mass, eases stress and anxiety, improves one's sense of well-being and done correctly, is a nifty way to shed extra kilos.
The Sports Science Institute of South Africa, in conjunction with the Cape Times, offer walkers a training programme for the 5, 10, 15 and 20km distances. These are published in weekly stages in the Top of the Times Cape Times supplement and on both our website and that of the Big Walk. There are also several useful articles in preparation for the Discovery Cape Times Big Walk. Articles by Kathleen Mc Quaide, Exercise Scientist, Health Promotions Manager at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa.
