MYSCHOOL MOVE FOR YOUR HEALTH DON LOCK MEMORIAL EVENT
Author: Kathy Mc Quaide - Little Date: 22/8/2010
OFF THE COUCH AND “INTO ACTION”
Nearly one third of children globally, are spending at least three hours a day watching TV or on computers, according to a study of more than 70 000 teens in 34 nations published in The Journal of Paediatrics, March 2010. Most children were found not to be getting enough exercise – in rich and poor countries alike.
Our South African situation is no different and the 2007 “Healthy Active Kids Report Card“ (a scientific document that assessed the state of health of South Africa’s children), found that our children’s most commonly reported leisure-time activity, was cell phone use! Forty percent of them are getting little or no moderate to vigorous activity.
Says the chief researcher of the international study, Regina Guthold - “I guess it's pretty safe to say that we have a huge problem with physical inactivity among schoolchildren around the globe and that we should take action”.
The Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA), Celtic Harriers, Woolworths and MySchool, in partnership with the City of Cape Town, are trying to tackle this situation by spreading the World Health Organisation campaign message “Move for Your Health”.
An event to promote this ongoing campaign, will be held at the Claremont Primary in Cape Town on Sunday 22 August. Entitled the “MySchool Move for Your Health” Don Lock Memorial 8km and 5km Fun Walk/Run, participants OF ANY AGE - are encouraged to participate. The 8 km and 5 km events start at 7h30 and 7h45 respectively. The 5 km fun walk/run has been added specifically to encourage primary school children to participate but children under 9 years must have adult supervision.
As part of the Woolworths Making the Difference school programme, which teaches learners across the country the importance of regular exercise, Woolworths has injected R20 000 prize money into the event’s Schools’ Mass Participation Competition, where schools with the highest percentage of learners participating, as well as the school with the outright highest number of learners will be rewarded. This event provides the ideal chance for schools to get active, have fun and win great prizes.
There will be individual prize money for licensed athletes in race positions in the 8km race only, but excellent lucky draw prizes for both events, including a generous sponsorship of thousands of rands of apparel up for grabs from New Balance and product vouchers from Sportsman’s Warehouse. The first 2000 finishers will receive medals.
Both adults and children are welcome and with the generous cut-off’s of 100 minutes for the 8km and 85 minutes for the 5km, social walkers are definitely accommodated. Visit www.ssisa.com for a six-week training programme for the 5km event or visit www.makingthedifference.co.za
